“We send down in the Qur’an that which is a healing and a mercy to those who believe: to the unjust it causes nothing but loss after loss.” (The Noble Quran 17:83)

As-salaamu ‘Alaikum,

As Muslims we believe in the world of the unseen, we believe that there are entities that exist beyond the realm of our perception and understanding. We have all heard of this world whether it was from some tales passed down from generation to generation through our families or stories told by that one elder cousin to initiate the chill down our spine on those dark and stormy nights. As Muslims we do believe in things that go bump in the night and we know how sinister they are capable of being.

The Jinn, magic and evil eye are stark realities of this world and they may be affecting our daily lives and behaviors more than we know or more than we are willing to understand. It is better for us to accept these truths and learn how to protect ourselves as well as those around us. This is where the topic of this discussion comes in, what do we do?

Prophet Muhammad (Blessings and Peace be upon him) advised that we should do Ruqyah to heal from these afflictions as well as illness. Ruqyah is the recitation of the Noble Quran and Du’as taught to us from our Prophet (PBUH) as a means to heal. It is also referred to as Exorcism, which I realize does not bring the best images to mind, but rest assured Exorcism (Ruqyah) is all about healing through Allah by mentioning His Greatness and His Holy Words. Reciting Ruqyah will remind not only the Jinn, but also you, of Allah’s Infinite Power and Status, of the fear we should all have of Him and of the Day of Judgment when no magician, man, Jinn or evil doer will be able to hide even his deepest darkest deeds.

*An important fact to remember before we get into the particulars of Ruqyah and what it entails is that we should rest assured and have complete faith and submission to the fact that Ruqyah itself is not the healer in this situation. The Healer, The Best of Healers, is and always will be Allah (Most Gracious, Most Kind). There is nothing that you or I can do that can be done without Him and His accord, Insha’Allah.

Every man and woman should know how to call on Allah for healing and protection from Jinn, magic, evil eye and anything that ails them or their family. In other words all believing men and women should know how to perform Ruqyah. A mother should know how to protect her children before they go to school or fall asleep, she should teach them the du’a to enter the toilet and the Ayah to read when they are fearful or sick, etc. A father, who is the head of his flock, should know how to perform Ruqyah so that he can safeguard his home, belongings and provide the vital protection to his family that is his Allah given duty.

It is also a good time to mention that Ruqyah alone cannot help you if you do not change your lifestyle to conform to that dictated by the Noble Quran and Sunnah. There may be things happening in your home that are less than halal or items which should not be kept in the house that may prevent the Mercy of Allah and His Angels from entering your home. These are illustrated clearly in Hadith and can include amulets or taweez, paintings of living creatures, dogs, photographs or statues and are not limited to even your children’s toys and pictures. All these things should be removed from the home or in the case of the child’s toys (think of things that have eyes like stuffed toys and dolls) put away in a toy chest so that they are not left out over a long period of time, Insha’Allah. Also, keep in mind that cleanliness is the mark of a pious Muslim, so please do make sure that your home is clean and well maintained without the noise of music and movies. Most importantly Quran recitation, your Prayers (Salah) and Du’a should be regular and with the utmost sincerity. Hold on to “the Rope of Allah” and don’t let it go! (The Noble Quran 3:103)
